Slack Etiquette

Who uses AIGA Jacksonville Slack?

AIGA Jacksonville has a large community of people who use Slack: students, designers, seasoned veterans, non-designers, the creative community at large. Members should be mindful of other people's involvement in the AIGA Jacksonville Slack community. Please be aware of your local time when you are sending a message that will notify other members of the message. Most users have phone and/or email notifications (@channel [see below] and direct message) turned on.

When should I @channel? Or @here?

Here are things to ask yourself before you send out a message using @channel:

  • Is this message important to everyone in this channel?
  • Does this message directly impact everyone in this channel?
  • Is this message somewhat time-sensitive?

  • General channel: This channel is for community-wide communication and announcements. All board and community members are in this channel.
  • Inspiration channel: Share links to articles, inspiration, tips, etc.
  • Random channel: Anything that doesn't belong in #general (memes, videos, chatter). A place for non-work banter, links, articles of interest, humor or anything else which you'd like concentrated in some place other than professional-related channels.
  • Jobs channel: A channel to share work opportunities or looking for freelance help. Full job post should be posted here: https://designjobs.aiga.org/
  • Other: The name and description will usually have more information on the purpose of the channel.

Do I Have to Use Slack?

No, but it is encouraged. Slack is one of AIGA Jacksonville's main methods of communication with the community. You may miss out on questions, announcements, community engagement, and more.
